The Value of User Stories in Pharma

Moushumi Ulrich-Nath

User Stories can help in the integration of patient perspectives in R&D, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, and Market Access (1).

I recently completed Google's Project Management Course.

Advantages:

  • Improve my business language

    • Science: ROI = region of interest

    • Business: ROI = return on investment.

  • Establish a solid project management basis to improve my future career prospects in management and leadership roles.

Unexpected insight:

What I was not expecting was my interest in Agile methodologies. Coming from a scientific academic background, Waterfall and Lean Six Sigma were in line with my environmental upbringing.

However, I learnt the value of Agile. It feels a bit cultish, but the whole point of project management is to incorporate whatever tools and methodologies available to ensure your project is a success. What I valued was the simplicity in the Agile process, the continuous checks on processes and products, and the user focus.

User Stories:

User stories describe a person, what they want, and why they want it. This helps guide the design process of a product or service.

I asked myself: Can Agile methodology be implemented in pharma, a highly regulated and standardized environment?

In fact, Agile has slowly been encroaching into Pharma (2).

Agile advantages in pharma:

  • Break silos - improve communication across departments

  • Incorporate the patient's perspective.

Here is an example of ChatGPT generated user stories with relation to a hypothetical asthma inhaler (AsthmaEase) and an associated app (AsthmaTracker).

In general, ChatGPT gave very vague examples. However, below I've selected examples where I thought ChatGPT showed diversity in potential stakeholders, and provided more detailed User Stories and Definitions of Done. Granted, the majority of the examples are for the Asthma tracking app (i.e. software - the original application of Agile), however this is also something to consider given the digitalization of health.
